10:21 am in Event News by Stewart Howe

Our dance tickets are now available. This year we are introducing a second dance option to increase the entertainment for those that are camping overnight and the wider public.  On Friday evening we will be holding a ‘Bangers & Mash Blitz Night’ reflecting the entertainment of ‘The Home Front’ with some live entertainment and dancing from 7.30 to midnight. To complete the experience we will have Bangers & Mash for you, all in the ticket price. Come and enjoy the entertainment and food of this dark time in our countries history, when even though they had to ‘Make do and mend’ and face great adversity, they still managed to enjoy themselves on occasions like these.

Saturday evening is Big Band Night, with the extremely popular ‘Alan Sticky Wicket Swing Band’   Music of the 1930′s, 40′s & 50′s Swing at its Best. This dynamic band, recreates all the excitement of the era with classic tunes and original arrangements. Entertaining, Visual…… & they’re great to dance to, too!!

As you would expect most people are dressed for the 1940s period at these dances, making them a lot of fun for everyone involved. Tickets are limited this year so get them now from our on line Booking link, then come along and be part of these very special entertainment experiences!

A selection of reasonably priced foods will be available on the Saturday night along with a licensed bar on both evenings.

Ramsey Militia Camp – A wartime history

8:42 am in History, The Camp by Stewart Howe

The Ramsey Militia CampBy Paul McAllister
Based on notes extracted from Regimental War Diaries 1939-1944, held by the National Archives.
Ordnance Survey Grid Ref: 750048.
Camp telephone number: Ramsey 2123.

Introduction

Ramsey Militia Camp was built during 1939, as a training centre for the first Army Class Militia intakes. Compulsory National Service (Conscription) into the Militia was introduced in the spring of 1939 and this required a programme of building numerous hutted camps across the UK to accommodate their training.

Background to Anti-Aircraft Command

The responsibility for anti-aircraft defences within the United Kingdom was given over in 1935 to the Territorial Army. Five (later increased to seven) Anti-Aircraft Divisions were raised in the TA by 1939. These Divisions were located throughout the UK , with 2nd Anti-Aircraft Division (TA) assigned to the defence of the Midlands and East Anglia . Two of its Brigades, 40th and 41st Anti-Aircraft Brigades (TA), had responsibility for Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. These Brigades consisted of a mix of Heavy-Aircraft units, Light Anti-Aircraft units and Searchlight units.

Time to move on

9:45 am in Event News by Stewart Howe

Ramsey 1940s weekend is on the move. Our popular annual event has been held at the old R.A.F Upwood airfield for the last six years, courtesy of the owner Tom Vaughn and Turbine Works. Due to the current downturn in the aircraft industry, turbine works have found hangars three and four surplus to their requirements for now and are in the process of leasing these buildings out. This means that hangar four that we have been fortunate enough to use for the day event and the evening dance may no longer be available to us, along with the areas around these two buildings. We have also encountered problems with the grass area outside Turbine Works that is owned by Strawsons Property Ltd. We have in the past, been able to rent this area for camping and car parking.

This has in fact turned into an exciting new prospect for the event. The 1940s committee have been able to secure a new, more permanent venue closer to Ramsey town centre. With the kind permission of Lord de Ramsey we have been able to secure a tenancy on the old militia camp on Wood Lane. This is very close to the Ramsey Rural Museum, where the event was in fact held for the first two years. Lord de Ramsey has also agreed to allow a tenancy to the 1940s committee on the 10.5 hectares (26acres) that lies between the museum and the old camp. This all means that the weekend event will be bigger and better and we have these facilities to use all year round.

Join the fun this August and enjoy old memories!

5:58 am in Event News by Stewart Howe

Every year for one weekend in August, Ramsey takes a trip back in time as it returns to the 1940s to remember the sights and sounds of this historic era. 2011 will be no different and on the 20th and 21st of August, Ramsey will celebrate all things Forties.

The highlight of this trip down memory lane is Saturday’s 1940s dance. There you can dance the night away to an authentic big band sound.

The daytime will see a procession of vintage vehicles, living history displays, stalls, Forties fashion shows and other special events. Looking for some authentic 1940s memorablilia? Ramsey 1940s weekend features a brilliant retail village, with a huge range of stalls selling all things Forties. From uniforms and authentic civilian clothes to paintings, postcards and medals, Ramsey 1940s Weekend will have a stall that can meet your needs.

The site also has a wealth of eating outlets – whether you’re looking for a cup of tea and a hot doughnut or a hogroast. And, the food of the Forties isn’t forgotten either, with endless mounds of spam sandwiches also on the menu!
